Sowing Winter Cereals
The fine weather of early October has allowed winter cereals to be sown.
13 hectares of Oats (var. Corrib) was sown at 130 kg/ha at Gurteen, and 20 ha of wheat (var. Sahara) was sown at 160 kg/ha at Trench Farm.
In line with Gurteen's objective of teaching students the practical skills needed for modern farming, all the work was carried out in turns by the students in the Machinery and Crop Production specialisation of CIA level 5. Each students work was marked, so the end results of their work could be monitored.
The group consisted of Adam Brangan (Ardcath Co. Meath), Cairan Cullinan (Rathdowney Co. Laois), Stephen Fanning (Gorey Co. Wexford), Eamon Murphy (Ballingarry Co.Tipperary), William O'Connor (Portarlington Co. Laois), Daniel O'Dwyer (Tullaroan Co. Kilkenny), Micheal O'Rourke (Bunclody Co. Wexford), Gareth Peoples (Carrigans Co. Donegal), Jamie Power (Dunkerrin Co. Offaly), Joe Redmond (Enniscorthy Co. Wexford), Thomas Redmond (Enniscorthy Co Wexford) and Paddy Whelan (Athy Co. Kildare).
The first set of photos shows students ploughing and sowing the oats. Instruction in ploughing and in the working of the seed drill is provided by Crops Technician Wray Platt.
The second set of photos shows the work progressing in the sowing of the winter wheat crop at Trench Farm.
