Educational Trip to Scotland

3rd-
Recently the drystock students from Gurteen College, along with some staff travelled to Scotland for an educational trip. The students departed Gurteen on Tuesday 3rd Feb and went to Shannon airport, from where they flew to Edinburgh.
On arriving in Edinburgh, the group checked in to accommodation at the Harbour Apartments on the east side of the city.
After a hearty breakfast on the Wednesday morning the students embarked on a trip to the Perth bull sale, along with visits to two machinery dealers in the Perth area, namely Agricar – New Holland dealers and Reekie machinery.
On Thursday the group visited The SAC Bush Farm, where they toured the farmyard and saw the new cattle shed and handling unit. After this they travelled south to the Scottish Borders where they had planned to visit the farm of Mr. Robert Neill, Upper Nisbet Farm (Farmers Weekly Beef Farmer of the Year 2006). The trip down south was halted by severe weather with roads close to the farm being impassable with heavy snow. After deliberation with the farmer the group took refuge in the mart at Newtown ST Boswell, where Mr Neill spoke to the students, and gave them a very comprehensive overview of his business. Afterward the group returned to Edinburgh.
On Friday the students had a free morning, with the return flight leaving Edinburgh in the early afternoon returning to Shannon and back to Gurteen.
