Certificate in Agriculture - Level 5

Course code: CAGXX

General:

This one-year full-time course aims to provide students with a quality practical agricultural education. It prepares graduates for farming, further training in farm management, farm work abroad and careers in agri-industry. The course has a high practical content, and students spend about half the day on farm practical and skills training and half the day in lectures.

 

Course content:

(a) Examples of modules (subjects) studied:-

Tractor Operations Animal Husbandry Farm operations

Computers Building Construction Farm Calculations

(b) Students choose to major in one of the following enterprise groups:

Dairy, Drystock or Tillage

(c) There is a 12 week period of practical training on a registered host farm.

Advanced Certificate in Agriculture – FETAC Level 6 (Gurteen College)

Advanced Certificate in Drystock Management (Gurteen College)

Advanced Certificate in Dairy Production (Ballyhaise or Clonakilty College)

Advanced Certificate in Farm Machinery (Pallaskenry College)

Advanced Certificate in Machinery & Arable Crops (Kildalton College)

Higher Certificate in Agribusiness (Mountbellew College + Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology)

Higher Certificate in Agriculture (Cork, Dundalk & Waterford Institutes of Technology)

Travel and farm in countries such as Australia, New Zealand or America (students are encouraged to gain experience abroad)

Full-time or part-time farming

Agri-business

 

This certificate is part of the qualification needed for:

Early Retirement Scheme (currently suspended)

Installation Aid (currently suspended)

Higher rates of Grant Aid

 

Entry requirements 2009-10:

Applicants must be 17 years of age on or before 1st January following their date of entry.

The Leaving Certificate is not essential but strongly recommended.

 

Course costs 2009-10 (after state grant):

Residential Student (including full board) €2278

Day Student €1100

(These figures include charges, deposits and Teagasc workbook costs)

Scholarships are available from some Co-Ops. Apply to your Co-Op
