Gurteen WINS Inter College Leadership Challenge
This competition was hosted by Kildalton College on the 19th of January 2012. Nine teams took part from the Agricultural, ...Horticultural and Equine Colleges.
A team of 12 students represented each college. Each student competed in three challenges throughout the day.
Brian Flynn represented Gurteen College in the Farm Relief Services Memorial Scholarship. Brian did a presentation on a chosen aspect of Leadership and came a very credible second in a competition of a very high standard.
The Gurteen team were unfortunate in the Soccer tournament, losing to Ballyhaise in the first round due to a spectacular own goal. The name of the own goal scorer is with the editor!
In the second round (when we exited the competition) just at full time, we were beaten by a great goal scored by a Gurteen past student who was on the Kildalton Horticultural Team.
Our team of Robert Ralleigh, Michael Hanly, Cathal Connell, David Durack, Michael Murray, James Keegan and Patrick O'Rourke gave their best and a special mention to James who was our top scorer. Well done James.
Our Quiz team of Barry Mealiff, Willie Neville, Alyn Conroy and Jamie Hendy gave a great performance, tying for second place and eventually finishing third place in an exciting playoff.
In the skills events after lunch we did extremely well with a first and second in welding, second in sheep stock judging and third in beef stock judging.
For the fun event of the day our team of Michael Murray, David Durack, James Keegan and Patrick O'Rourke came third, they seem to perform better with their eyes closed and we're thinking of leaving them blindfolded for the rest of the year!
The final event, the Colleges Challenge, was a full team effort and with 60 points on offer, we needed a very focused team. We walked home in the first round and had a few feet to spare in the final, giving Gurteen the valuable points.
All the teams congregated in the fine library of the new wing in Kildalton College for the results and presentations. After the prize giving for the individual events, Gurteen were crowned the overall winners. A great day was had by all. Thanks to Kildalton for hosting the event this year.
