Location:

This 2 year course in the skills of Horse and Business Management is designed for students who wish to make their living working with horses. It is delivered mainly in Gurteen College in year 1 and mainly in Athlone in Year 2.

First-year students can be accommodated in Gurteen College or arrange lodgings locally.

Students may keep their own horses at the College (some conditions and charges apply). Students are not required to bring horses, as the College can supply all horses needed.

Leaving Certificate (see minimum entry requirements below):

Any FETAC Level 5 course (Links Scheme).

Mature students 23 or over on the January 1st before the date of entry (possible interview).

Leaving Certificate - minimum entry requirements:

Leaving Certificate with at least D3 passes at Ordinary level in five subjects, which must include Mathematics* and either English or Irish**.

*Maths at Foundation level or Applied Leaving Certificate is not acceptable: it must be an Ordinary D3 or Honours E grade.

** Foundation Level Irish at grade B3 meets the minimum language requirement. No points are awarded.
 

2006 cut-off points: AQA.  Median points: 260.

2007 cut-off points: 110.   Median points: 260.

2008 cut-off points: AQA.  Median points: 275.

2009 cut-off points: AQA.  Median points: 275.

2010 cut-off points: 120.   Median points: 280.

2011 cut-off points: 190

 

First-year course costs 2011-12:

Residential Student (including full board and single room) €4,300

Day Student (including lunch) €1,360

Day student (without meals) €400

Student Services Fee (€2,250 approx.) may be payable to Athlone Institute of Technology.

Estimated additional cost of textbooks €150

Means-tested TLT grants are available to Irish and E.U. students: apply to Your Local VEC (Vocational Education Committee).
